Romanian President Nicusor Dan has accused Russia of escalating hostilities along NATO's eastern flank following a drone strike that sank a commercial cargo vessel off Romania's Black Sea coast. The attack resulted in the death of at least one crew member, while three others remain unaccounted for in the water.

Romania's naval authority reported that the Comoros-flagged vessel, named Khoryv, issued a distress call approximately 13 nautical miles off the port of Constanta, situated just beyond Romanian territorial waters. The ship carried a crew of 13 Ukrainian and Azerbaijani sailors. Rescue operations managed to retrieve nine individuals from the sea, alongside the recovery of one body, leaving three sailors missing. Footage released by local authorities showed only a small fraction of the capsized hull remaining above the surface before it went under.

The incident comes amid a sharp rise in maritime aggression across the region. Over a two-week span, at least seven cargo vessels have been struck off the coastlines of NATO members Romania and Bulgaria, resulting in an estimated 30 mariners dead or missing. President Dan described the strike as part of an ongoing escalation linked to the war in Ukraine.

In response to escalating regional threats, NATO announced plans to deploy additional maritime patrol aircraft, advanced radar systems, and surveillance drones across the Black Sea. Defensive measures have already seen direct engagement, with Romanian fighter jets intercepting and shooting down two advanced Russian drones over Romanian territorial waters on Saturday. How will these expanded surveillance and air patrol measures influence commercial shipping safety across the Black Sea?
