Entertainment giant Disney has agreed to extend job offers to the majority of employees at Character.AI following the chatbot startup's recent bankruptcy filing. According to a legal filing reported by Bloomberg, Disney plans to hire at least 60 workers from the company, committing an estimated $60 million in total annual compensation to the incoming talent.

The employment arrangement follows a preliminary agreement where Disney agreed to purchase selected assets from Character.AI for $20 million. The startup previously saw its former chief executive officer, Karandeep Anand, transition to Disney to serve as the entertainment company's first chief technology officer. The legal filing noted that the vast majority of Character.AI personnel who received employment offers from Disney have accepted them.

Because Disney's asset purchase serves as a stalking horse bid within bankruptcy proceedings, other prospective buyers could still submit higher offers for the startup's assets. Character.AI entered bankruptcy despite maintaining what court documents described as a large and engaged user base, as the business struggled under substantial operating costs, regulatory scrutiny, and legal challenges.

Among the legal and regulatory headwinds cited in the filings, Character.AI faces government investigations regarding child safety practices. The company was also named in a lawsuit filed by the mother of a 14-year-old boy, who alleged that her son became obsessed with a Character.AI chatbot prior to dying by suicide. How might this acquisition shape Disney's broader technological strategy as it absorbs the startup's workforce?
